The Bestiary Archive

The school's index of the creatures — every being the class meets

The wax seal of Professor Sable Rookmere

This is the school's index of the creatures: one hundred twelve beings, every one the class meets, kept by me and shelved by the unit and lesson where you will meet it. Each earned its place the same way — people set it down in earnest as true of the world, in a record that can still be found, dated, and read. Search by name, or walk the shelves unit by unit. Where a being shares a lesson with its kin, the archive says so plainly — nothing here is padded, and nothing is hidden.

And if the being you seek is not on these shelves, do not force it in. It belongs to the Unfinished Page, and the capstone will teach you to write its entry yourself, to the same standard as all the rest.

HOW THE SHELVES ARE RULED
LESSON — the being carries its own lesson.  PAIRED — two kindred beings share one lesson, each with its own record.  GROUPED — taught inside a family lesson with its kin, with its own record and paragraph.  NAMED — appears inside a relative's lesson, by name, with its record noted briefly.

The law of the Unfinished Page. This archive holds every being the class's census ruled in, and no others. A being not found here was not forgotten: some were ruled out with reasons — closed living traditions stay with their people, gods of living faiths are not beasts of record, and beings born as film, game, or internet characters belong to their makers. Everything else — every being the record has not yet brought to the school — belongs to the Unfinished Page, where scholars document new beings by their own hand, exactly as the capstone teaches.
