HERBOLOGY GREENHOUSE · POTIONS LABORATORY — A SHARED KEEPING

Materia Botanica

The school's botanical archive — every plant the lessons teach, in one keeping

An honest word about this archive. These entries are the school's own Materia Botanica — the shared reference of the Greenhouse and the Laboratory — opened on the web. The living plant stands in Professor Fernfoot's keeping; the laboratory in Professor Muddlenook's. Plants the lessons profile in full carry full entries; plants they only mention are labeled brief mentions and kept honestly short, exactly as the book keeps them. Nothing here is medical advice, and the toxic shelf is marked wherever it stands.

IN THE LABORATORY

OR SIMPLY

Two hundred and two plants stand in this archive — the same keeping as the printed Materia Botanica, which remains on the Bookstore shelf for scholars who want it bound.

Every plant named in the Herbology Greenhouse and the Potions Laboratory, gathered into one book. The Materia Botanica is the school's shared reference: 202 plants, drawn from all thirty-seven Herbology lessons and the whole of Potions, each with its entry — what it is, how it grows, how the lessons use it, and the cautions that belong with it, stated as plainly as the uses.

Two professors keep it. Professor Fernfoot's scholars meet these plants growing; Professor Muddlenook's meet them again at the workbench. One book serves both classrooms, because it is the same green world in both.

A reference is not a shortcut around the lessons. It is where you check what the lessons taught you, and where a plant you met in a corridor of the castle gets its proper name. Look things up. Then go back outside and look at the plant again.

Take the Book With You

The Materia Botanica is a book to own, in whichever form suits your shelf. The PDF download below is the book itself, for scholars who read on a screen or print their own copy at home. A printed edition for Lulu is in preparation, bound for the greenhouse and the workbench alike. Students building their own herbal in Herbology Lesson 36 work from the book's companion blank entry templates, free at the button above, and the school shop carries a short Materia Botanica Archive Entry Packet for filing specimens and records.

The Index of Plants

Every plant in the book, in order, with the lessons where you will meet it. Featured plants are grown, profiled, or used hands-on; the rest are mentioned where the lessons need them.

Safety lives in the entries themselves: any plant that can harm is marked in its entry, and the book follows the school's standing rule — identification is done with eyes and fingertips, never with the mouth.
