The Name Meridies

The South and the Midday Sun

The name Meridies comes from Latin and means "midday" or "noon." It also came to refer to the southern direction.

This connection developed from the apparent position of the Sun. In much of the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun appears toward the south when it crosses the local meridian at solar noon, the moment it reaches its highest position in the sky for that day.

This relationship is not universal. Depending on latitude and season, the midday Sun may appear to the north or pass nearly overhead.

The Latin word meridies is also related to the English term meridian, used in geography and astronomy to describe a north-south reference line.

At Evershade, this historical relationship between midday and south inspired Meridies's identity as the House of Passion, Courage, Vitality, and Transformation.

The midday Sun represents a point of brightness and activity within the daily cycle. Evershade chose this association to reflect the House's emphasis on energy, determination, and the pursuit of meaningful goals.

The name therefore preserves a genuine connection to Latin language and astronomy while giving that connection a symbolic purpose within Evershade.

The Southern Lands

Direction: South

The Southern Lands: an oasis in a sea of dunes

South is one of the four cardinal directions, positioned opposite north.

The southern direction encompasses a remarkable range of geographical environments, from tropical forests and dry deserts to temperate grasslands, mountain ranges, and the icy continent of Antarctica.

There is no single climate or landscape that defines the south.

For Meridies, Evershade draws particular inspiration from sunlit landscapes, warm environments, and regions where plants and animals have developed adaptations for high temperatures and limited water.

Its associated scenery includes open grasslands, rocky deserts, sunlit valleys, and landscapes shaped by volcanic activity.

Volcanoes form where molten rock reaches Earth's surface. Their activity can build mountains, create new land, and transform existing landscapes.

Desert environments also demonstrate the remarkable ability of organisms to survive under demanding conditions. Many species have specialized behaviors or physical characteristics that help them manage heat and conserve water.

These environments provide inspiration for Meridies's imagery, architecture, and atmosphere.

Although its identity is inspired by the south, Meridies welcomes scholars from every part of the world.

The Element of Fire

Ignis

Fire is one of the four classical elements recognized in several ancient philosophical traditions.

In modern science, fire is not a chemical element. It is the visible result of combustion, a chemical reaction in which fuel reacts with an oxidizer, usually oxygen, releasing energy as heat and often light.

Fire has played an important role in human history. People have used controlled fire for warmth, cooking, metalworking, pottery, and many other technologies.

Its effects can be both beneficial and destructive. Fire may provide essential heat and enable useful processes, but uncontrolled burning can damage ecosystems, structures, and living organisms.

In some environments, naturally occurring fires also play an ecological role. Certain plants and ecosystems have adapted to periodic burning, although fire frequency and intensity can strongly influence the resulting effects.

Within Evershade, Fire represents passion, courage, vitality, and transformation.

Its warmth and light provide a fitting metaphor for enthusiasm and discovery, while its ability to change materials reflects the ways knowledge and experience can transform our understanding.

Evershade chose Fire for Meridies because these qualities complement the House's emphasis on purposeful action and the courage to explore unfamiliar ideas.

Fire also connects Meridies to its creature, the fennec fox, through the House's warm-climate inspiration, and to its Common Room, the Hearth.

The Season of Summer

Aestas

Meridies is associated with summer and the months of June, July, and August, following the Northern Hemisphere's meteorological seasons.

In many Northern Hemisphere regions, summer brings longer periods of daylight, warmer temperatures, and increased biological activity.

Plants may grow rapidly when adequate water and nutrients are available, while many animals adjust their behavior to changing temperatures and seasonal food supplies.

Summer conditions vary greatly by geographical location. Some regions experience heavy seasonal rainfall, while others undergo prolonged dry periods or extreme heat.

The Southern Hemisphere experiences the opposite seasonal cycle, with its warmest season generally occurring during December, January, and February.

Evershade chose summer for Meridies because of its associations with energy, activity, growth, and the abundance of sunlight.

The season complements the House's emphasis on vitality and the determination to pursue new experiences.

Just as living organisms respond to changing environmental conditions, scholars grow through challenges, discoveries, and opportunities to develop their abilities.

The summer months are symbolic associations, not requirements for membership. Scholars born in any season may choose Meridies.

The Hour of Meridies

Midday • The High Sun

Each House of Evershade represents a period within the daily cycle.

Oriens is associated with morning and the rising Sun. Meridies represents midday, when the Sun reaches its highest daily position. Occidens represents evening and the setting Sun. Septentrio completes the cycle through its association with night and the northern stars.

Of the four House names, Meridies has the most direct connection to a particular time of day.

The Latin word itself means midday or noon.

Solar noon occurs when the Sun crosses the observer's local meridian. It does not necessarily happen at 12:00 on a modern clock because civil time zones and the apparent motion of the Sun do not always align.

At this point in the day, the Sun reaches its highest daily altitude above the horizon.

Evershade chose midday to represent Meridies because of its direct linguistic connection and its symbolic associations with brightness, energy, and purposeful activity.

For the House, midday represents the determination to act upon ideas, pursue discoveries, and bring effort to its fullest expression.

The Colors of Meridies

The Tradition of Hues

Each of Evershade's four Houses follows a different principle of color: shades, tints, hues, or tones.

Meridies is the House of Hues.

In traditional color theory, a hue is a recognizable color family, such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or violet.

Unlike a tint, shade, or tone, a hue does not inherently describe a color made lighter with white, darker with black, or muted with gray.

Evershade chose vivid, saturated colors for Meridies to emphasize the House's associations with sunlight, energy, and summer.

Crimson

A rich, vivid red inspired by glowing embers, warmth, and the intensity of fire.

Orange

A bright orange associated with flames, sunlit landscapes, and the warmth of summer.

Golden Yellow

A brilliant yellow inspired by direct sunlight and the brightness of midday.

Turquoise

A vivid blue-green associated with brilliant summer skies and sunlit waters.

Magenta

A striking pink-purple inspired by colorful summer flowers and the expressive possibilities of bold color.

Together, these colors give Meridies a bright, energetic, and distinctive identity.

The palette is not restricted to five specific colors. Other vivid, saturated colors may appear in House artwork, decorations, and student creations.

Antique gold remains part of Evershade's shared heraldic tradition and appears in the House crest and official insignia.

The Four Virtues

Courage

The willingness to act despite uncertainty.

Courage involves facing challenges, asking difficult questions, and attempting something unfamiliar even when the outcome is uncertain.

It does not require the absence of fear.

Meridies values thoughtful courage, including the ability to recognize risks, seek guidance, and make responsible decisions.

Sometimes courage means taking the first step. At other times, it means acknowledging a mistake or trying again after disappointment.

Passion

The enthusiasm to pursue what matters.

Passion is a strong interest in a subject, activity, or purpose that encourages continued exploration and effort.

It may appear through creative expression, scientific curiosity, careful research, or dedication to a personal goal.

Meridies encourages scholars to discover what interests them and develop those interests through learning and practice.

Passion does not always need to be loud or immediately visible. Quiet dedication can be just as meaningful as outward enthusiasm.

Vitality

The energy to engage with life and learning.

Vitality represents enthusiasm, engagement, and the desire to participate meaningfully in the world.

Within Meridies, it reflects the energy scholars bring to their interests, discoveries, and contributions.

Vitality is not measured by physical strength, constant activity, or an outgoing personality.

A scholar who approaches a quiet project with curiosity and determination may express this virtue just as fully as one who thrives in energetic group activities.

Transformation

Growth through experience and discovery.

Transformation is the process of becoming different through learning, experience, or changing circumstances.

In the natural world, transformations occur through chemical reactions, geological processes, and biological development.

Within Meridies, transformation represents the ability to learn from experience, reconsider earlier assumptions, and develop new skills or perspectives.

The House encourages scholars to recognize that meaningful change often develops gradually through patience and effort.

The Virtues of a House. These virtues are ideals that Meridies celebrates, not personality requirements. A scholar may already identify with them, wish to strengthen them, or simply appreciate what they represent. No Everspark is expected to embody every virtue perfectly.

The fennec fox is a small species of fox native to the deserts of North Africa, particularly the Sahara.

It is especially recognizable for its unusually large ears, pale sandy coat, and small body.

Its ears help it detect prey and contribute to heat exchange, while its fur provides insulation against the temperature extremes of desert environments.

Fennec foxes are primarily nocturnal, avoiding much of the intense daytime heat by remaining in burrows and becoming more active after dark.

They feed on a varied diet that may include insects, small vertebrates, eggs, and plant material.

Evershade selected the fennec fox as Meridies's House creature because of its remarkable adaptations to warm, arid environments.

Its ability to survive in demanding conditions provides a fitting representation of resilience and adaptability, while its energetic movements and alert nature complement the House's chosen associations with vitality and courage.

Although Meridies represents midday, the fennec fox's nocturnal behavior is an important part of its real biology. The House's association with the Sun is symbolic, not a claim that fennec foxes are active in the midday heat.

What Does Aurel Mean?

Aurel is a masculine given name associated with the Latin name Aurelius, which is commonly linked to the Latin word aureus, meaning "golden."

The name's golden association complements Meridies's imagery of sunlight, warmth, and the brilliance of summer.

Within Evershade, Aurel's name and species bring together the House's color palette, environmental inspiration, and elemental identity.

Aurel appears in the House's heraldry, artwork, and official symbols.

The Crest of Meridies

Symbols of the Southern House

The crest of Meridies brings together the House's southern identity and the shared heraldic traditions of Evershade.

Its traditional shield and antique-gold detailing establish its place among the school's four Houses.

The eight-point Evershade star represents the connection between Meridies and the wider school.

Aurel the fennec fox serves as the House's principal creature emblem, while solar and flame-inspired motifs reflect its associations with sunlight, summer, and Fire.

Vivid, saturated hues distinguish Meridies from the other Houses.

The crest is an official symbol of House identity and may appear on documents, artwork, announcements, and House materials.

The Hearth

Common Room of House Meridies

The Hearth: an archway opening onto oasis dunes

The Hearth is Meridies's official Common Room, located within the southern halls of Evershade.

A hearth is the area surrounding or forming the floor of a fireplace. Historically, hearths were important places for warmth, cooking, and gathering within a home.

The name was chosen to reflect Meridies's connection to Fire and the historical importance of controlled heat in daily life.

Within Evershade, the Hearth represents a place where scholars can gather, exchange ideas, encourage one another, and turn individual interests into shared experiences.

The Hearth serves as a gathering place for Meridies scholars to share discoveries, discuss their studies, participate in House activities, and contribute to their community.

While it primarily serves Meridies, visiting scholars from other Houses may explore the space.

The Hearth is distinct from the Quadrivium, the shared student commons available to every Everspark.

Professor Crimblebrew Muddlenook

Professor of Potions

Professor Crimblebrew Muddlenook serves as Head of House Meridies.

As Professor of Potions, he guides scholars through the study of ingredients, preparations, mixtures, and traditional apothecary methods.

His field involves observation, experimentation, careful measurement, and an understanding of how materials may change when combined or processed.

These academic pursuits complement Meridies's virtues of passion, courage, vitality, and transformation.

As Head of House, Professor Muddlenook helps guide the Meridies community, encourages participation, and supports the development of its activities and traditions.

His classroom, like every classroom at Evershade, remains open to all scholars regardless of House membership.

House Life & Traditions

Meridies's identity is established, but many of its traditions are still being formed.

Its scholars will help shape the activities, customs, and shared experiences that become part of the House's history.

Future traditions may include seasonal observations, collaborative projects, creative challenges, academic activities, and contributions to the wider Evershade community.

Some may become annual customs, while others may develop naturally through the interests of House members.

Those who join Meridies during its early years have an opportunity to help establish traditions that future scholars may continue.

Choosing Meridies

Every scholar at the School of Evershade is an Everspark, whether they belong to a House or not.

House membership is entirely optional.

The Evershade Sorting may recommend Meridies based on a scholar's responses, but it does not assign membership. Scholars are welcome to explore all four Houses and choose whichever community appeals to them.

There are no restrictions based on birthplace, birth month, academic interests, or personality.

Choosing Meridies does not determine which classes a scholar may attend. Every classroom remains open to every Everspark.

House membership simply offers another way to participate in the school community.

The Four Houses of Evershade

Four directions. Four elements. Four seasons. Four periods of the day.

Four Houses within one school.

Every scholar is an Everspark first.

Scientia antiqua scintilla discendi renovatur.
