Continue your studies in Runes & Ancient Writing with this 14-page companion assignment packet for Unit I, Lesson 2: Egyptian Hieroglyphs - The Uniliteral Sound-Signs, taught by Professor Thistleloom Webblethorn at the School of Evershade.
Designed to accompany the free Lesson 2 material, this packet takes students beyond the idea that hieroglyphs were simply “picture writing.” Through archive work, analysis, practical study, and creative exercises, scholars explore how Egyptian scribes used images to communicate sound as well as meaning.
Students will work with the Rebus Principle, eight foundational uniliteral consonant signs, logograms, phonograms and determinatives; practice determining reading direction; examine the structure and historical purpose of cartouches; compare writing and preservation on papyrus and stone; explore scribal tools and pigments; and build a working lesson vocabulary including rebus principle, uniliteral sign, determinative, cartouche, and transliteration.
The packet also includes an Apprentice Egyptian Scribe practical, in which students create a papyrus-inspired practice sheet using sound-signs, intentional reading direction, grouped hieroglyphs, a determinative, and a cartouche study.
For students who prefer a creative or supply-free activity, the Tomb-Wall Fragment Reconstruction invites scholars to imagine and document an archaeological inscription fragment complete with hieroglyphs, reading direction, a cartouche, traces of pigment, damage, and a museum catalogue caption.
The 14-page packet includes:
Assignment Scroll and lesson objectives; six sections of archive work; Apprentice Egyptian Scribe practical; optional Tomb-Wall Fragment Reconstruction; 10-question Lesson II Quiz; Instructor Archive answer key and guidance; and suggested scoring.
