The Seasonal Specials
CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOP · SEASONAL SPECIALS
Four times a year, the Workshop puts down its bench work and takes up the season's work instead.
Each special is a gathering as much as a lesson. The whole school is invited, the builds are sized for company, and each workshop is hosted by the house whose season it is, on that house's own ground: autumn at Occidens' Terrace, winter up in Septentrio's Aerie, spring at Oriens' Greenhouse door, and summer at Meridies' camp. I lead the making at all four, because the tools come from my shelves, but the season belongs to the host house, and the work follows the season the way farm work always has. You keep in autumn. You mend and shelter in winter. You start things in spring. In summer, you make the keepsakes and take the sky's measure while the days are long.
Every special makes three things, and every scholar who comes leaves with the season's work in hand. The tickets each special needs are named with it below. They are the same workshop tickets the course teaches, and a special is a fine reason to finish a lesson a scholar has been meaning to take. Watch the school noticeboards for each workshop's date as its season comes around.
The Specials
Special 1: Autumn: Harvest & Keeping
Hosted by House Occidens at the Terrace and the Workshop. The keeping season: what the year grew, gathered, pressed, dried, and stored well. Tickets needed: Lessons 7, 10, and 21.
Special 2: Winter: Feeders, Lanterns & Sealed Letters
Hosted by House Septentrio in the Aerie and the Workshop. Care work for the dark months: feeders for the birds, a dark-sky lantern built in full, and letters sealed in wax for the pen-pal exchange. Tickets needed: Lessons 5, 17, and 23.
Special 3: Spring: Starting & Growing
Hosted by House Oriens at the Greenhouse door and the Workshop. The work of beginnings: the clay vessels young plants start in, and the shelter they start under. Tickets needed: Lessons 19, 21, and 22.
Special 4: Summer: Camp Keepsakes & the Weather Station
Hosted by House Meridies at the summer camp. The camp's two instruments of keeping: a bound book that keeps the days, and a weather station, rain gauge and wind vane, that keeps the sky. Tickets needed: Lesson 2, and Lesson 9 or Lesson 11.
Capstone: The Master Artisan's Build
One substantial build serving another class or a real Evershade need, with a build log kept from plan to finish and assessed alongside the object.
A Word on Coming Along
A scholar does not need every ticket in the course to come to a special, only the ones the season's work names. Newer scholars are paired with steadier hands for the sharp and hot steps, the way it has always been done when a whole household works together, and the adult-only steps stay adult-only whatever the season.
Come for your own house's workshop if you come for no other. Then come for the other three, and learn what the year asks of a maker in somebody else's season.
