Unit VII: Carving & Metal
CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOP · UNIT VII OF VII
Every unit so far has worked material that gives a little: paper folds, cloth yields, clay remembers a thumbprint. This unit works the materials that push back.
Carving and metalwork are the oldest crafts in this course and the least forgiving. A chisel does not care what you meant to cut. A wire bent once too often snaps where it was strongest a moment before. So this unit proceeds the way careful makers have always proceeded: soft material first, layout before cutting, and a rule so simple a scholar can say it half asleep. Brush before chisel. The unit opens with the carving ticket itself, earned in soap and basswood before any stone is touched. Then come the inscription crafts, runestones, ogham sticks, and plaques, where the workshop lends its hands to the Runes classroom and Webblethorn's scripts get cut the way their first makers cut them. Last, foil, wire, and simple metal: embossed foil in the spirit of early medieval work, drawn wire and woven chains, and the metal seal matrix finished at full craft.
The course closes inside this unit, with the capstone: the Master Artisan's Build. One substantial piece, chosen by the scholar, serving another class or a real need of the school, planned and logged from first sketch to final finish. The build log is assessed alongside the object, and a mended build, honestly logged, passes with honor.
Unit Learning Objectives
By the end of this unit, scholars will be able to:
- Carve to a marked line in soap and basswood, and state the brush-before-chisel rule and why it exists.
- Lay out letterforms on wood or soft stone, carve them cleanly, and finish carved letters with paint in the historical manner.
- Explain the runestone tradition, the ogham pillar stones, and the evidence that carved runes were painted.
- Emboss a foil square with a clean raised design and bend a wire joint that holds.
- Describe repoussé and chasing, drawn wire, and bronze at survey level, and finish a metal seal matrix at full craft.
- Plan, build, and log one substantial piece for the capstone, using at least three of the course's tool tickets.
In This Unit
Lesson 27: First Cuts: Carving Safely
Carved figures older than farming, Egyptian stone carving, soap and basswood as the teaching materials, layout before cutting, and the brush-before-chisel rule.
Lesson 28: Runestones, Ogham Sticks & Inscription Plaques
The Jelling stones and the great Rök inscription, ogham on the edges of pillar stones, bilingual stones, and painted runes, with the scripts themselves staying in Webblethorn's classroom.
Lesson 29: Foil, Wire & Simple Metalwork
Repoussé and chasing, the Sutton Hoo ship burial at survey level, drawn wire and woven chains, bronze, and the metal seal matrix at full craft.
Capstone: The Master Artisan's Build
One substantial build serving another class or a real Evershade need, with a build log kept from plan to finish and assessed alongside the object.
The Unit VII Quiz closes this unit. You will find it, with its download, at the end of Lesson 29: Foil, Wire & Simple Metalwork.
What Scholars Will Practice and Make
The first-cut drills of Lesson 27, done in soap and basswood until the chisel follows the line and the brush moves before it, every time. A practice inscription piece, letterforms laid out and carved in scrap wood or soft stone before any real stone or stick is chosen. Foil and wire drills, an embossed practice square and a bent wire joint, repeated until both come out clean. And the capstone build itself, logged honestly, mends and all.
The workshop's work does not end at the capstone. Scholars who want more will find the Studio Extensions waiting: precision paper instruments built to last, a permanent sundial, models that move, painted wheels at full size, and relief displays. Through the year, the Seasonal Workshop Specials open the bench to the school's calendar: Harvest and Keeping in autumn, Feeders, Lanterns and Sealed Letters in winter, Starting and Growing in spring, and Camp Keepsakes and the Weather Station in summer. The tickets earned here are spent there, and everywhere in Evershade that something needs making well.
