Unit I: Foundations of the Laboratory

POTIONS LABORATORY · UNIT I OF VI

Scholars, before we steep a single petal, we build the laboratory. This is the unit the rest of the course stands on, and I do not apologize for its thoroughness. An apothecary who cannot zone a workspace, label a jar, weigh a dram, or close the hearth properly is not ready to extract anything, and I would rather you be slow and certain than quick and sorry.

In these nine lessons you will claim your bench, learn the vessels and the glass, start the journal that will hold two years of work, master the apothecaries' weights, learn the mortar and pestle, take the census of your materials, and perform the clearance ritual that ends every working session. None of it is glamorous. All of it is the craft.

Unit Learning Objectives

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Zone any workspace, however small, into the six functional areas and work a full session without breaking zone discipline.
  • Choose, inspect, clean, and register laboratory vessels, and retire any vessel that is chipped, cracked, or heat damaged.
  • Label every vessel before filling it, read apothecary shorthand, and seal a jar with wax as a tamper-evident promise.
  • Keep a recipe journal with numbered pages, an index, and entries written during the work, never reconstructed after.
  • Weigh and measure in the apothecaries' system and demonstrate tare weighing on a kitchen scale.
  • Grind dried materials with correct grip and motion, judge texture by eye and touch, and clean between materials.
  • Conduct a complete simples census, inspect stored materials for spoilage, and draft Materia Botanica entries.
  • Perform the full hearth clearance shutdown and file the checklist in your archive.

In This Unit

Lesson 1: Welcome to the Potions Laboratory

The course opening: the apothecary's craft, the Safety Covenant, and the six-stage rhythm of every lesson.

Lesson 2: The Scriptorium & Workspace Zoning

Divide your workspace into six functional zones and draw the lab map your archive will live by.

Lesson 3: Vessels, Jars & Blown Glasswork

From Roman blown glass to your bench: choosing, inspecting, washing, and registering the vessels of the laboratory.

Lesson 4: Labels, Wax Seals & Ingredient Markings

The archive's first law, label before filling, plus apothecary shorthand and the promise of a wax seal.

Lesson 5: Recipe Journals & Archival Notes

Set up your recipe journal and practice the honest discipline of writing during the work, never after.

Lesson 6: Apothecary Weights & Measures

Grains, scruples, drams, and ounces: the apothecaries' own system, and the beam balance that reads them true.

Lesson 7: Grinding

The mortar and pestle: grip, stance, and the pounding and circular motions every apothecary learns first.

Lesson 8: The Simples Census

Take stock of every simple in your laboratory and draft your first Materia Botanica entries.

Lesson 9: Hearth Clearance

The full shutdown ritual, extinguishing, securing, sweeping, and filing, that closes every practical lesson from here on.

The Unit I Quiz closes this unit. You will find it, with its download, at the end of Lesson 9: Hearth Clearance.

What Scholars Will Practice and Make

By the end of this unit you will have a zoned workspace with a drawn lab map, a registered set of clean labeled vessels, a started recipe journal with an index, a working knowledge of the apothecaries' weights, ground herbs judged by texture, a completed simples census, and the clearance checklist you will file after every practical lesson for the rest of the course.

When the bench is ordered and the archive is open, we turn to the materials themselves. Unit II begins with the most delicate of them: flowers, leaves, spices, and aromatics, and the training of the senses that judges them.
