Unit V: Botanical Formulations

POTIONS LABORATORY · UNIT V OF VI

Extraction gives you ingredients. Formulation gives you preparations, things with texture, structure, and staying power, made to a recipe and kept to a standard. This is the unit where the laboratory starts to resemble the old apothecary's shop: the bench crowded with balms and candles, the soap curing on the rack, the ledger filling with batch records.

You will learn the wax-to-oil ratio that governs every balm, the capillary action that governs every candle, the go-between work of emulsifiers, and saponification itself, including the cold-process crucible with its non-negotiable lye protocol. You will also do something no earlier unit asked: you will break things on purpose. The failed batch, honestly recorded, is one of the finest teachers in the laboratory, and the experimenter's ledger you start here will serve you for years.

Unit Learning Objectives

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Name the five members of the semi-solid family and predict a balm's texture from its wax-to-oil ratio.
  • Explain wick behavior through capillary action and cast a container candle while managing cooling faults.
  • Design a dry fragrance blend with a ratio structure and file a complete Blend Record.
  • Explain how an emulsifier works and prepare a whipped emulsion, recording separation behavior over days.
  • Prepare crystalline scrubs in three grain grades and write a formal texture description for the archive.
  • Cast layered melt-and-pour soap bars with colorants and botanical inclusions, without handling lye.
  • Explain saponification, recite the lye safety protocol from memory, identify trace, and calculate a lye requirement with superfat margin.
  • Diagnose the seven common formulation failures from visible evidence and keep a permanent failure ledger.
  • Design an original formulation on paper using the one-variable rule, prepare a display-only trial, and document it honestly.
  • Maintain a Formulation Matrix, Batch Records, a Texture Log, a Stability Record, and a Revision Ledger to the Master Formulation Standard.

In This Unit

Lesson 35: Balms, Salves & Cerates

The wax-to-oil ratio that controls firmness, and a display balm made to standard.

Lesson 36: Candles & Aromatic Wax Casting

Wicks, capillary action, and cooling behavior, ending in a cast container candle.

Lesson 37: Sachets & Household Storage Blends

Dry fragrance blends, fixatives, and the Blend Record.

Lesson 38: The Whipped Emulsion

Why oil and water separate, and how an emulsifier plays go-between.

Lesson 39: Crystalline Scrubs & Bath Preparations

Salt and sugar crystal behavior in three grain grades.

Lesson 40: Soapmaking: Melt & Pour Artistry

Layered, colored, botanical-embedded bars, with no lye handling.

Lesson 41: Soapmaking: The Cold-Process Crucible

Saponification, the non-negotiable lye protocol, trace, and the cure.

Lesson 42: The Failed Batch

The seven common formulation failures: diagnosed, deliberately broken, and ledgered.

Lesson 43: The Experimental Formula

The one-variable rule and the experimenter's ledger.

Lesson 44: The Formulation Matrix

The master index linking every preparation to its records, observations, and revisions.

The Unit V Quiz closes this unit. You will find it, with its download, at the end of Lesson 44: The Formulation Matrix.

What Scholars Will Practice and Make

By the end of this unit you will have made balms, a candle, sachets, an emulsion, scrubs in three grades, and soap by both methods; you will have broken an emulsion on purpose and written up the failure; and you will hold a Formulation Matrix with batch records, texture and stability logs, and a revision ledger. You will know, from evidence, what works and why.

Technique is proven. Now the course turns outward to beauty. Unit VI takes up fragrance, pigments, and the botanical arts: pomanders and perfumery, incense traditions, inks, plant stains, paper aging, and wax seals, and closes with the audit of everything you have built.
